Help with my ferrel cat?

with 9 comments

Ana is two years old and very shy. She is not so much vicious but won’t let anyone touch her and is very scared. I decided to put her in a cage (large enough for her to walk around, eat, and have a litter box and bed) until she was social enough to live in the rest of my apartment. She has been in the cage for about two months, she has made some progress- I am able to pet her while she is in her bed, most of the time. I have begun to try and touch her outside of the cage, which is still iffy. The cage and bed have become her security and refuses to leave them most of the time, especially when people are around. I had been opening the cage, which is in my bathroom, to let her come out and walk around so she got used to me being around her, but she hardly came out unless i made her. What i decided to do was open the bathroom door, with her cage open, and let her roam the small living room and kitchen (because there is no where for her to hide). She has been coming out and playing in the bathroom somewhat. She came out in the living room once.. about a few inches. Does anyone have any advice on how to tame her and guide her away from the security of the bed and cage? I don’t think the bed attachment is as bad as the cage.. I will certainly keep the bed when she is tame enough to live in the apartment.

How do I get rid of roaches in my room?

with 2 comments

My room has carpet flooring and I live in a house, not an apartment. I used to have a pet rabbit living in my room and she chewed out the carpet from all four corners and so the underneath is exposed. I don’t know how they get into our house in the first place. So the disgusting creatures got in through those exposed gaps that lack carpet and are living underneath my carpet in my room! I am so scared that they are laying eggs and I know they are definitely living and growing under there! I see all different sizes from babies to the bigger ones.

How can I get rid of them? A professional is a last resort as we don’t have the money for that. I have tried powder, but that has not solved the problem. I so desperately want new carpet, but we don’t have money for that either. My parents said they would buy something to plug up the holes in the carpet, but that was weeks ago and they haven’t followed through on their promise. That still would not solve the problem as they will still be living and breeding under there.

I just saw one a few minutes ago and it was very big and I’m scared to go to sleep now, but it’s so late and I’m tired. I put some more powder. I put a large amount that completely covers the holes, but the smell is getting to me. I have my door open and a fan on – I can’t open my windows because other bugs get in. I assume me breathing in the powder is dangerous and toxic. What could happen? Please help me I don’t know how much more I can take. I am still looking up more solutions at the moment.

Sorry for making this so long, I hope you will take the time to read it and help me out – I’m desperate. Thank you.
Of course it’s gross Jen, you see my problem?

I just covered up 2 of the holes by putting some cardboard over them. Mind you that’s most likely temporary and not very ’sturdy’.

I still have the rabbit in the house. I’ve read briefly about the bombs and it’s not an option I’d like to take.
The powder is "Hot Shot MaxAttrax Roach Killing Powder with Boric Acid"

Anyone have experience with cat no-kill shelters?

with 4 comments

Specifically in what to look for? Someone has abandoned their pet cat in the apartment complex I live in, and she snuck into mine when I opened the door.

I can’t keep her :(

If I did I’d have to spend a large amount of money according to the terms of my lease, or I’d have violated it and have 3 days to move. I’m already filing bankruptcy and I have nothing left. I couldn’t afford cat food let alone the vet bills, but I cant just let her die outside.

Im, looking into no kill shelters but I have no experience with them, and I’m uncertain what to look for. Some of those places are pretty bad off. I’m living in central Ohio if it helps.

How do I stop aggressive behavior?

with 3 comments

We’ve always known that our cat was aggressive and territorial. That’s the reason that she’s only pet that we have. Lately, however, it’s been getting ridiculous. We live in a large apartment complex with lots of stray cats wandering around outside.

Several times now, we have been awakened in the very early morning hours by our cat trying to fight one particular cat through the glass door in the living room. We’ve tried punishing her for it, tried running the other cat away. It just doesn’t stop it. Calling animal control doesn’t help because the cat is impossible to find when it’s not strolling across our patio and torturing out cat.

What can we do to calm her down and stop her from fighting cats that aren’t even in our apartment?

Depressed rat, possibly?

with 8 comments

We just bought a rat a few days ago. Our apartment is incredibly small and cluttered so the cage isn’t incredibly large, but to alleviate this we have him out as often as possible, usually on the bed because it’s the only place with a large amount of space (yay, college). He’s incredibly happy to be out, running around, pouncing on our hands, playing with string. Eventually we have to return him to his cage, but as soon as we do, he begins to stare dolefully at us and eventually starts to gnaw on the bars. I know that they gnaw on the bars as a means to grind their teeth, but he only ever gnaws the bars of the door, which says to me he’s trying to escape.

I don’t know what to do. We’ve given him toys, stuff to climb on, empty toilet paper rolls, dangly things, and his cage isn’t all that much smaller than the one in the store we bought him from, but he just doesn’t seem satisfied.

I want to buy him a companion, but I’m worried about a few things.

1.) We don’t have room for a bigger cage. The current cage is big enough for one rat, and could theoretically house two, but it might get a little… cozy.
2.) No room for a bigger cage means that I definitely don’t have room for a second cage to put next to his to introduce them.
3.) What if they don’t like each other?

Would it advisable to buy one of his siblings from the pet store? (It’s an independent pet store that breeds them, not like a Petco) We just bought him a few days ago so they would still be there. Would they remember each other?

Gaah. I’m not sure what to do.
I didn’t even consider a vertical cage. That seems like a pretty good option.
